Dear Dr Platt
My 19 year old son is loosing his hair prematurely. His hairline is receding and his hair overall is thinning. Is there anything he can do to prevent this?
Thank you for your kind assistance and advice. Cheers.

Unfortunately, hair loss in males is mostly a genetic result. The mother actually carries the gene that is inherited from her father. I suspect that your father may have started losing hair around the same age as your son.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the hormone that is most likely contributing to this. He can have a test to determine this level. There are several supplements that help in this regard, such as saw palmetto, beta sitosterol, pygeum, nettles extract, and green tea extract. There are prescription drugs such as Propecia and Minoxidil, but I would start with the natural supplements.
There are also supplements containing biotin to stimulate hair growth as well.
Please let us know if we can help.
