Hey Doc Series/Progesterone and Gout

Hi
My husband is currently started Platt Pro, his sugar numbers are getting better, but he is having a flare up of his gout problem. Can this be connected to this cream? He has had problems with gout for years.

Thank you,
SHIRLEY Y

Dear Ms. Shirley.

Let me start off by saying that progesterone cannot precipitate a gout attack.
It cannot elevate uric acid levels.

Is it possible he has taken some aspirin or a diuretic recently, or perhaps had some alcohol – these are substances that can elevate uric acid levels.

In the meantime, since progesterone down-regulates into cortisone, he can try applying the cream directly to his toe to see if it reduces the inflammation.

In fact, progesterone cream has been used in the treatment of gout.

Michael E. Platt, md
